In reading the Bangor Daily News articles on the proposed $2 tax on cats and mandatory rabies shots, I searched my memory and could only recall a rabies care regarding foxes back in the ’60s and ’70s with the state setting out poison to control the problem. Cats, to my knowledge, have been a problem.
It seems as though the veterinarians would be the only ones benefiting from this ill-advised proposal. At $16 to $20 a shot, with an estimated 300,000 cats, $4.8 million to $6 million would be a healthy boost to their business, with absolutely no benefit to the pet owner.
I urge pet owners to contact the legislators to defeat this proposal. Terry Lyon Medway
