PALO ALTO, Calif. – Ellsworth’s Ben Shorey broke an American Junior record in the 10,000-meter racewalk Friday and was named the Verizon Men’s Outstanding Athlete of the Meet at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships held this weekend at Stanford University’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Shorey was one of several Maine natives to put up excellent showings at the meet.
Shorey’s time of 42 minutes, 50.20 seconds broke the record set by Tim Seaman in 1991 (34:03.37). It was Shorey’s second straight American Junior title. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside student qualified for the World Junior Championships.
Maranacook of Readfield’s Jonathan Chasse was fifth with a time of 50:26.13. Mark Dennett of Winthrop finished eighth (56:13.07).
Mt. Blue of Farmington’s Adam Staier was disqualified in the 10,000. Staier had won the mile racewalk title at the Adidas National Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week.
Anne Favolise, who competed at Narraguagus High in Harrington and is a teammate of Shorey’s at the Wisconsin-Parkside, was second in the women’s junior 10,000 racewalk. She finished with a time of 51:20.08, one of three Wisconsin-Parkside racewalkers to place in the top five.
Favolise held off Maria Michta of Walk USA (51:23.31).
Dirigo of Dixfield’s Jasmine Brooks was sixth with a time of 55:03.03.
Farmington native Kevin Eastler claimed third place in the 20,000-meter racewalk Sunday morning. Eastler races for the U.S. Air Force.
Former Ellsworth track star Louie Luchini was fifth in the men’s 5,000-meter run Saturday night. Luchini, who runs for Stanford, finished in 13:34.18.
