Bowdoin College announces new financial officer

BRUNSWICK – S. Catherine Longley of Brunswick, commissioner of the Maine Department of Professional and Financial Regulation, has been named senior vice president for finance, administration and treasurer at Bowdoin College. Bowdoin College President Barry Mills announced the appointment Monday.

“Katy Longley is superbly qualified to lead Bowdoin’s financial management team,” Mills said. “As we compete around the world for top students, it is vital that we manage our financial and human resources wisely and with a vision for the future. I have every confidence in Katy’s ability to lead these efforts. It’s a great pleasure for me to welcome her back to Bowdoin in this new capacity.”

A member of the Bowdoin class of 1976, Longley will serve as the senior financial officer of the college and be responsible for the overall fiscal health of the institution. She will also oversee the departments of human resources, dining service, campus services (including the bookstore), and the administrative component of information technology. She will report directly to Mills and manage a staff of 155. Longley will start the position on Sept. 3.

Gov. Angus King appointed Longley to her state government post in 1995. As commissioner, she serves as a member of King’s cabinet and acts as the chief administrative officer of the department that regulates banks, credit unions, insurance companies, investment advisors, and other professional and occupational trades. She manages a department annual budget of $16 million and a staff of 220 and serves in a number of key policy making roles for the state.
