Rams take two from Vikings

CARIBOU – The Bangor Rams got some very strong pitching to sweep a twinbill from the Caribou Vikings 12-0 and 13-1 in schoolboy baseball action here Saturday.

The Rams are now 7-6 and the Vikes are 2-9.

In the opener, Tony Fernandez pitched two-hit, shutout ball for five frames and David Foley had a scoreless sixth.

Scott Young hit a three-run homer and a single, Rob Estey a solo HR and two singles and Pat Masters a double, two singles and three RBI.

In the nightcap, Eric Murray had five strong frames with Craig Bowden and Jeff Bowden finishing up with scoreless innings.

Estey had another homer for the Rams, this one with two men on, while Young also homered for the second time with the bases empty, with Jeff Bowden also hitting a solo HR. Fernandez doubled and singled.

The Vikings were led by Ryan Thibodeau with two doubles and Josh Babbidge with one double.

At Harrington, Willard Bailey hit a bases-loaded single to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh and led the host Narraguagus offense with two doubles and a single against Sumner of East Sullivan.

Chad Fenton hit a two-run double for the 10-1 Knights.

Wally Coombs led the 6-5 Tigers with a double and two RBIs.

Brewer 15, Nokomis 12

At Brewer, Peter Fogg (2-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings of four-hit ball and had a double and single for two RBIs to lead the Brewer Witches to their seventh victory of the season.

Jeff Millett tripled and singled for two RBIs, and Matt McGrath had two singles and two RBIs for the 7-4 Witches.

Craig Hartsgrove belted a grand slam in the second inning and also doubled for the 1-11 Nokomis Warriors of Newport. Jake Hughes hit three singles.

Orono 5, John Bapst 3

At Husson College in Bangor, Marc Halsted’s two-run single and John Whibey’s two-out RBI double in the fifth proved to be the difference as the Orono Red Riots rallied for five runs and posted the win.

Zac Pelleriti and Kevin Churchill each singled twice for the 6-6 Red Riots. Mark Thibodeau pitched a three-hitter for the victory.

For the 5-6 Crusaders, Keith Goulet doubled and tripled while Matt McDevitt added a double.

Ellsworth 14, Dexter 1

At Dexter, the Eagles collected their 11th win of the season against only one setback. Ron Shea pitched three-hit ball for six innings, fanning 10, before Jim Brichetto pitched the scoreless seventh.

The Eagles wrapped it up with a nine-run fourth, highlighted by Shawn Bagley’s three-run home run. Bagley also had a double for Ellsworth, while Bob Perry and Brichetto both singled twice.

For the Tigers, now 2-9, Jason Stewart, John Watson, and Clifford Page each singled.

Russell lifts Tigers past Hawks in 8th

HODGDON – Fort Fairfield’s Bob Russell laid down a bunt and successfully executed a suicide squeeze with one out in the eighth inning to score the only run of the game and give Fort Fairfield a 1-0 schoolboy baseball win over Hodgdon here Saturday.

Russell’s bunt scored V.J. Bernier from third. Bernier reached on a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball.

For the 9-1 FF Tigers, Bernier had three singles. Kent Willette pitched a three-hitter, struck out 11, and walked one to outduel Hodgdon’s Avon Stewart in a classic pitching matchup.

Stewart pitched a six-hitter, struck out 11, and walked two for the 5-6 Hawks. Steward also singled twice and Joe Cain added another single for the only other hit.

At Dyer Brook, Ricki Shields belted a three-run homer in the second inning, a solo home run in the sixth, and a single for a total of five RBIs to lead host Southern Aroostook to the win over Community High of Fort Kent.

For the 10-1 Southern Aroostook Warriors, Scott McLellan singled twice. Kyle Fox (3-0) notched the win in relief.

Singles by Chuck Michaud and Nathan Gray were the only hits by the 5-7 Warriors.

At Lincoln, Jim Hanscom (7-6) came on in relief in the second inning and pitched five innings to get the win and hit a solo home run in the third inning to lead the host Mattanawcook Academy Lynx over Schenck of East Millinocket.

Jason House had two singles and three RBIs for the 7-6 Lynx. Josh Vose singled twice and drove in one run.

Ray Houston hit a two-run double for the 0-11 Wolverines. Lucas Coon, Jason Gagnon, and Jarod Stanley each hit RBI singles.

Ponies sweep Stearns

At Dover-Foxcroft, Mike Smith slapped a total of five singles to spark Foxcroft Academy to wins of 8-1 and 6-5 over Stearns of Millinocket.

The sweep upped Foxcroft’s record to 9-2. Stearns slipped to 7-2.

In the opener, Smith drove in three runs with three singles and pitcher Mike Hoschouer fired a three-hitter in improving to 2-2. Mario DeIseo tripled and drove in four runs. John Moore added two singles and an RBI.

Stearns was paced by Bill Sloan’s two singles.

In the second game, Forest Briggs doubled and scored the game-winning run with two out in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Niles’ grounder turned into an infield error.

Briggs also had two singles and an RBI for the Ponies, while DeIseo got the pitching win. Smith had two singles. Niles doubled and singled.

For Stearns, Lateef O’Connor singled to drive in a run. Jay Seamans doubled and singled.
