Every community needs a holiday it can call its own.
For Brewer residents, that holiday is Brewer Day, annually held
tthe third Saturday in May. Created by the Brewer Business Council
aas a way to help people appreciate Brewer for the sense of
ccommunity that it provides, Brewer Day lists many activities for
ppeople to enjoy.
The Fourth Annual Brewer Day celebration will begin at 7 a.m.,
SSaturday, May 19, with the Brewer Farmer’s Market, an annual
ttradition that brings area farmers and their customers to the
BBrewer Auditorium parking lot every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
uuntil fall.
At 8 a.m., registration will start at the auditorium for the
aannual Fun Run, which is sponsored by the Brewer Health Center.
TThere is a $6 entry fee.
From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., a hot air “display” balloon from Damn
YYankee Gifts on Outer Wilson Street will be tethered next to the
BBrewer Auditorium.
The Fun Run will start at 9 a.m.
A city whose residents thoroughly enjoy shopping at yard sales,
BBrewer will hold the largest area yard sale of the weekend from 9
aa.m. to 4 p.m. The Brewer High School cheerleaders will offer
fface-painting for children, and “Party With Us,” a business located
oon Wilson Street, will provide free balloons for youngsters.
The entries in the photo contest sponsored by the Photo Source
oon Wilson Street will be displayed inside the Brewer Auditorium
ffrom 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Photographs are entered in one of several
ccategories, and onlookers will thoroughly enjoy seeing the best
wworks of Maine’s amateur and professional photographers.
The Brewer Kiwanis and the Brewer Police Department will
ssponsor a bike-a-thon to benefit St. Jude’s Childrens Research
HHospital. This event, which lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will take
pplace on the Wiswell Road past the Brewer Armory.
According to Sgt. Mickey Blanchard of the Brewer Police
DDepartment, participants in the bike-a-thon will obtain pledges
bbefore setting out on their bicycles for a course that runs from
tthe armory to the Green Point Road and back. That portion of the
WWiswell Road between Parkway South and the Green Point Road will be
cclosed to all but local traffic during the bike-a-thon.
PParticipants will pedal for so many pledges per mile.
From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Brewer Historical Society will hold
iits annual yard sale at the Clewley Museum on Wilson Street. Tours
oof the museum will be available throughout the day.
Beginning at 10 a.m., units participating in the Brewer Day
PParade will kick off from the North Brewer Shopping Center, proceed
ssouth on North Main Street to the traffic light, and then turn left
oonto State Street. The parade is sponsored by WQCB-106.5 FM.
Parade units will include the clowns, minibikes, and bagpipers
ffrom the Anah Temple Shrine and an antique oil truck from the Dead
RRiver Co.
Area firefighters will gather at the Twin City Plaza for a
FFiremen’s Muster from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Antique automobiles will be displayed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in
aan event sponsored by the Brewer Convalescent Center Head Injury
TTreatment Program.
Throughout the day, different entertainment will take place at
tthe Brewer Auditorium:
11 a.m. — the Heart of Gold Vaudeville Review will appear on
sstage to entertain children and adults alike. Based in Buckfield,
tthis organization has received the sanction of the Maine Touring
AArtists program.
12:30 p.m. — musician Anne Dodson will entertain Brewer Day
ccelebrants. A resident of Camden, Dodson performs traditional,
ccontemporary, and folk music, as well as the blues, and accompanies
hherself with a guitar or a dulcimer.
2 p.m. — well-known Bangor-area magician Bruce Johnson will
bbring magic feats to the auditorium stage. A Bangor native, Johnson
hhas trained under nationally renowned magicians and has created a
rrepertoire of magical feats.
3 p.m. — the Bangor Community Chorus, under the direction of
GGail Zuck, will provide a variety of songs, including both golden
ffavorites and contemporaries.
The Brewer Kiwaniannes will sponsor a baked bean supper at the
aauditorium from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Prices for this delicious meal
aare $4 for adults and $2 for children.
Brewer Day festivities will culminate in a 7 p.m. concert
ffeaturing the three-piece acoustic group Devonsquare and Maine
hhumorist Tim Sample. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for
cchildren.
The concert is partially sponsored by the Lemforder Corp.
According to Brian Higgins, the owner of NP Studios who
ccoordinated the entertainment for Brewer Day, the three people (Tom
DDean, Alana MacDonald, and Herb Lunwig) who belong to Devonsquare
“”took time out of a busy recording schedule to appear in Brewer. We
aare very pleased to have them on stage.”
Tim Sample has earned national recognition for his ability to
pportray the funnier aspects of Maine lifestyles, from the
ttraditional pink flamingos on a front lawn to the accent of a Down
EEast lobsterman.
