McKernan to speak at ceremony

AUGUSTA — Gov. John R. McKernan will address a memorial service to honor Maine law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. The ceremony will be held at noon Thursday, May 17, at the future site of the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, adjacent to the State House.

The service will be attended by police officers from throughout Maine and also will include remarks by James Tierney, attorney general, and John R. Atwood, commissioner of public safety.

A wreath of 66 red carnations, each in honor of a slain officer, will be placed at the proposed memorial site.

Darrell Malone, police chief of Houlton, will read a roll call of the fallen officers and give a progress report on the fund-raising effort, which is approaching its goals.
