Bedford corrects inflated figures of Gamache purse

Saying he “spoke out of turn,” an associate of Main Events promotions confirmed Tuesday night he did not really know how much money Lewiston boxer Joey Gamache will make from his upcoming title fight in Portland.

Lester Bedford of Main Events, who told the media in Bangor Monday that Gamache would make “between $70,000 and $100,000,” during a press conference hyping the June 13 World Boxing Association lightweight bout at the Cumberland County Civic Center with South Korean Chilsung Chun, recanted his figures after drawing criticism from long-time Gamache co-promoter Johnny Bos.

“He gave you figures that aren’t there,” said Bos Tuesday. “Joey will make $50,000. It’s on the contract. There’s no way those other figures are correct.”

Bedford said he relayed figures to the press he heard discussed during a meeting between Bos and Dan Duva of Main Events “a month and a half ago.”

“Those were the numbers I heard being discussed,” said Bedford. “Johnny said the numbers have changed. I’m just not aware of everything that’s going on. I was giving you numbers I had heard. But I’m no official spokesman.”

Bos said Bedford’s releasing inflated figures on Gamache’s purse to the media could have legal ramifications.

“What happens if the IRS reads those articles saying Joey is supposed to make $100,000 and he’s only made $50,000?” Bos said. “This guy (Bedford) thinks he’s more important than he is. He wanted to make the fight sound more important than it is.”

Bos said the foreign television rights Bedford said would draw $100,000 will only draw “$30,000 to $40,000.” Bos said much of that business will be done in Korea, and Chun owns the Korean TV rights.

Beford said another reason his figures were incorrect is the capacity at the Civic Center for the fight, initially listed at 9,100, has been cut to 8,400 because of press seating, television cameras, and fire codes.

“The house is down in gross potential,” Bedford said.

Gamache takes a 28-0 record into the 10-round bout. Chun is 18-1.
