Vikings win EM `A’ title

WATERVILLE – Third singles player Chelsea Belanger and the two doubles teams consisting of Karen Rockwell and Sheri Dyer and Tiffany Pelletier and Jessica Huck, helped lift the top-seeded Caribou Vikings schoolgirl tennis team to a 3-2 victory over Gardiner in the Eastern Maine Class A Team Tennis Championship match at Waterville High School here.

The Vikings will face Western Maine Class A champion South Portland on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the University of Maine courts in Orono.

Belanger defeated Denise Douin 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2); the team of Rockwell-Dyer bested the Gardiner duo of Kristen Cote-Katie DiCara 5-7, 6-0, 7-5; and the Viking tandem of Pelletier-Huck eked out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Kim Batten and Kim Palmer.

The Tigers top two singles posted wins as Julie Kilcoyne defeated Anne Bernard 6-3, 6-4 and Darcy Toothaker bested Lise Carter 6-0, 4-6, 6-4.

In boys action, the Brunswick Dragons bested the Cony Rams of Augusta by a 3-2 score.

Brunswick will face Lewiston for the state title on Saturday, also at 2 p.m. at the UMaine courts.

Brian Rizzo-Jason Brann 7-5, 7-6 (7-4); Mason Irish-Mike Pitts (B) def. Jay Meyer-Trevor Lubenstein 6-2, 6-0.

Big match was No.3 singles: Nadeau (lost 6-3 6-3 in reg. sseason) came back from 4-1.
