ACS schedules benefit tourney at PVCC June 22

The American Cancer Society Golf Championship makes its 15th annual appearance at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

This year’s event is scheduled for June 22 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.

The tournament is a fund raiser for ACS, which provides educational materials and programs and support groups among its many services to cancer victims.

Tournament Chairman Dick Hawkins, taking over the reins previously held in an able manner by Dr. Shaun Dowd, is hoping to be able to continue to make a contribution to ACS of $5,000, which has been the average in recent years.

To do that, Hawkins and his committee needs 18 foursomes, 72 players, for the event.

There are three divisions for men and three more for women.

Men’s Division I is for those foursomes whose lowest handicap player is seven or below; for Division II, the lowest handicap player must be between eight and 16, inclusive; and in Division III, the lowest handicap player must have a handicap of 17 or above.

For the women, Division I is for teams whose lowest handicap player 11 or below; in Division II, it’s 12-22; and in Division III, it’s 23 or above.

Winners in each division advance to the state championship Aug. 29 at Sugarloaf Golf Course in Carrabassett Valley. State winners advance to the national championships, usually in Miami in October.

The entry fee per foursome is a combined contribution of $200 to the American Cancer Society. Entries must be mailed before June 17 to Richard Hawkins, Hamel Fuels, P.O. Box 567, Brewer 04412.

Entry forms can be requested by calling Hawkins at 989-3966 or ACS at 989-6550.

Work is moving forward on The Jimmy Fund Barbara Leavitt Memorial Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 17 at Bangor Municipal Golf Course.

The tournament has been started in honor of Barbara Leavitt, the wife of retired Bangor Daily News Executive Sports Editor Bud Leavitt. Barbara Leavitt died of cancer in 1990. The tourney is a fund raiser for The Jimmy Fund, which Barbara Leavitt contributed to for many years.

The Jimmy Fund helps cancer victims of all ages at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

The tournament committee is currently soliciting host and major sponsorships and has put out entry forms for players.

A host sponsorship (a maximum of two is available) is $2,500 with the sponsor receiving six tournament playing spots, recognition on the sponsor board, and recognition at the host tent.

For a major sponsorship of $1,000 (unlimited number available), the sponsor gets four playing spots, free tee advertising, and recognition on the sponsor board.

General sponsors of $100 receive tee sign advertising and sponsor board recognition.

Interested parties can contact Rick O’Connor at 945-9979 or Frank Jordan at 941-1181.

The entry fee for players is $100, which includes golf, cart, and post tournament hospitality tent.

The tournament will use the popular scramble format with teams consisting of a foursome plus a celebrity, if possible.

Bangor Muni assistant pro Brian Enman is taking entries now. Forms are available from committee members, at Legends Restaurant, and a limited number are available at the NEWS.

The entry deadline is July 1.

Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono will be a busy tournament site this season.

In addition to the Maine Amateur Golf Championship, which is July 14-16, and the above-mentioned ACS tournament, the club is putting on the Charlie Emery Memorial Tournament on July 6.

Emery was the club’s highly respected and well-liked pro from 1945-72. He died in 1989 at age 81.

The tournament will be 18 holes of stroke play with gross and net prizes.

The tourney is open to all players with USGA-certified handicaps and players must have proof of handicap the day of the event.

To enter, contact head pro Colin Gillies at 866-2423.
