Tips for making camping easier on all

Use laundry and dishwashing soap that is biodegradable and contains no phosphates.

If you’re traveling with more than one family, think of renting a van instead of taking multiple cars. For short trips from the campsite, take the healthy route and bicycle or put on those hiking shoes.

Reduce packaging by purchasing items in bulk; leave excess supplies at home. Pack necessities in food containers that stack versus disposable plastic bags. Choose containers that can be nested when not in use to save space.

Pack paper towels, napkins and toilet tissue made of recycled paper. Take along cloth towels to reduce waste.

Expandable plastic pop-up boxes that fold flat when not in use will save space. Look for them where storage products are sold.

Check for the triangular recycling symbol on products you buy. These codes are designed to help industry in its recycling efforts.

Rely on rechargeable batteries to help reduce waste.

Bring enough garbage bags so you always have one for garbage, another for recyclables.

Plan on plenty of liquids, especially if your family is heavy on hiking or sports activities. Pack dry drink mixes, then make as needed.

Pack for convenience. For example, store syrup near the pancake mix; coffee with the coffee pot, etc.

Keep your campers happy; test new recipes at home first.

Make it easy on the kids. Put travel and campsite games in sealed containers for easy, moisture-proof storage and to help keep pieces from getting lost.
