VERONA — A Friday fire that leveled a single-story ranch-style home in this island community was caused by some faulty electrical appliance wiring.
Bucksport Fire Chief Gene Weston said Wednesday that the fire at the Jeff Bennett Jr. home originated in wiring leading to either an electric fan or an electric blanket. Neither of the devices were switched on at the time of the 2 p.m. fire.
Weston said that many people commonly believe that because an electrical device is turned off, it is not conducting electricity.
“That’s clearly not the case,” he said.
Weston responded to the fire with three pumpers, two tanker trucks and an additional tanker from Orland. The 25 firefighters arrived to find the house fully involved in flames. Within 15 minutes the fire was under control.
No injuries were reported to the firefighters. Weston said there were no members of the Bennett family inside at the time of the incident. The family, he said, is believed to have been insured for their losses and is staying with friends and family in the area.
