Yanks, OT-O both sweep

ORONO – The Downeast Yankees of Ellsworth and the Old Town-Orono Twins both won a pair of games Sunday in the opening-round of the Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League playoffs at Mahaney Diamond here.

Fourth-seeded Downeast opened with a 10-1 victory over No. 5 Coastal of Blue Hill and followed by beating top-seeded Bangor-Brewer 6-2.

Third-seeded OT-Orono blanked the No. 6 Hilltop Hurricanes 7-0 and then edged No. 2 Molunkus 5-4 on Sunday evening.

Coastal and Hilltop were eliminated in the format slated double-eliination action for the four remaining clubs.

Monday’s games will see Bangor-Brewer face Molunkus at 6 p.m. and Downeast meet OT-O at 8:30 p.m.

Downeast 10, Coastal 1

Danny Kane hit a two-run double, and belted a solo home run in the fourth inning to lead the Downeast Yankees to the victory.

For Downeast, Dave Gray singled twice and doubled. Bob Perry doubled and singled for an RBI. Bain Pollard also singled twice.

Todd Hamel singled twice and Travis Ripley added a double for Coastal.

Downeast 6, Bangor-Brewer 2

Downeast, the No. 4 seed, stopped No. 1 Bangor-Brewer behind Troy Brown’s pitching.

Bill Hodgdon led the Ellsworth offense with two singles and two RBI. Dave Gray also had two singles. Danny Kane had a double and an RBI.

Tim Throckmorton’s double highlighted the Twins’ attack.

Brown won on a five-hitter with two earned runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.

OT-Orono 7, Hilltop 0

At Orono, Dana Andrews pitched a four-hitter, struck out seven, and walked three in addition to hitting a two-run triple in the fourth inning to lead the Twins to the win.

Ryan Soucy singled twice and drove in a run. Jamie Campbell hit a double. For Hilltop, Kevin McIntyre singled twice.

OT-Orono 5, Molunkus 4

Jamie Campbell’s RBI in the seventh inning put the Double O’s of Old Town-Orono past the Molunkus Travelers in the tournament’s Sunday finale.

Campbell had a total of two RBI. Sean Sullivan hit three singles and an RBI for the Double O’s. Rob Erskine also had repeat singles while Ryan Soucy chipped in with an RBI double.

The Travelers’ Randy Brodeur had the big hits of the game, slamming two homers. Brodeur knocked in four runs. Randy Harris and Phil Petri each had two singles. Paul Bosse and Troy Martin both tripled.

Campbell was the winning pitcher posting 10 strikeouts and one walk.
