CARRABASSETT VALLEY – Portland’s Tom Angis shot a course-record 69 to win the State of Maine Tournament at Sugarloaf Golf Club Tuesday, finishing the two-round tourney with a two-under par 142.
Bath’s John Hickson finished second at two-over 146 and Bangor’s Randy Hodson third at six-over 150.
Angis and Mike Baker of Bar Harbor were the first-round leaders with one-over par 73s. Baker finished fifth at 152, one stroke behind Portland’s Mo Guttman.
David Brewster of Auburn was the tourney’s top amateur with a 153. Mark Plummer of Manchester finished second at 156 and Ernie Ashton of Portland and Todd Kirn tied for third at 157.
Hickson did have a four-stroke lead after 14 holes, but three-putted for a double bogey on the par-3 15th while Angis made par to close to one stroke.
Angis made par on the par-5 16th after hitting his tee shot in the woods and Hickson bogeyed, dropping two shots back.
Both players parred the 17th and Angis finished with the four-stroke victory when Hickson hit his tee shot into the lateral hazard on No. 18.
