4 singers’ scholarship winners announced

ELLSWORTH – Four recipients of the Lee Patterson Scholarship Fund for Classical Voice Training were named at the final evening performance on Saturday, July 13, of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Hancock County’s “Ruddigore” at the Grand Auditorium.

The four winners for 2002 are Abra Iwanko and Zachary Field of Bangor, Caroline O’Grady of Sedgwick and Lindsay Smith of Hancock. Iwanko and Field will study voice with Ann Mills; O’Grady and Smith with Valerie Eaton.

The scholarship fund, established in March 2001 by Somesville resident Lee Patterson through the Maine Community Foundation, provides financial support to singers who want to receive training in classical voice.

In exchange for help in developing their expertise in opera, operettas, and art song literature (1600-1920), the scholarship recipients agree to sing with the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Hancock County during their award year. In 2003, the society will present “Patience.”

Applications for 2003 scholarships are available from Lee Patterson by calling 244-4044; the deadline is March 15. Minimum age is 14, and preference is given to residents of Hancock and Washington counties.
