Old Town must work hard to make championship game again

The Old Town Indians have the proud distinction of having played in the LTC Class B championship game for three consecutive seasons.

The ultimate goal for the 1992 Indians would be to make it four in a row, but Coach Jim Walsh knows that will be a difficult feat.

Old Town will begin its quest with only five returning starters after graduating 17 seniors. The Indians must replace most of their offensive line and the quarterback, along with several other positions.

“We’ve established ourselves as a perennial contender in the LTC, but we’ve got some serious question marks to answer this year,” said the 10th-year coach. “We still have some excellent kids, great athletes. We also have a lot of people who have not played much varsity football.”

Old Town is led by senior offensive guard-defensive end Aaron King, the lone two-way returning starter. Senior noseguard Mike Hines is another key, along with junior TB-LB Andy Roy and senior FB-LB Jay Thomas. Junior Rob Cody, a two-way tackle, also played regularly a year ago.

Senior Brian Grigsby becomes the fourth straight senior to be converted into a quarterback at Old Town. T.J. Smart, Paul Bosse and Jason Richards were his predecessors. Senior split end Eric Morrison, senior tight end Adam Kepple and senior split end Wayne Keeran are some of his likely targets.

Finding a dependable tailback is another priority, with Roy and senior Randy O’Leary the leading candidates. Senior Mike Day and junior Jaret Lizzotte are vying for the wingback spot.

The development of the offensive line will be crucial. King and Cody are the mainstays, with seniors Brent Fournier, Cory Thibodeau and Jason Cyr, along with juniors Eron Gray and Scott Hamlin, expected to vie for the other positions.

Walsh said there will be a great deal of on-the-job training for his players, because of the lack of game experience.

Senior Wayne Keeran, a former soccer player, has given the Indians a potent kicking game and will also contend for starting spots on both sides of the football, including in the secondary.

Walsh’s Old Town teams have shown a propensity for making marked improvement from the beginning of the season to the end, and this squad will need to continue the trend if the Indians are to make a run at one of the four Class B playoff spots.

It appears the LTC Class B division will feature much parity this fall, which gives Walsh reason for optimism.

“It should be a very evenly balanced league,” he said. “Our realistic team goal is to make the playoffs. We hope to play well enough to be in contention for one of those four playoff spots.”
