2 killed, one injured in car-truck accident

WESTFIELD — Two men were killed and a third man was in stable condition at Gould Memorial Hospital in Presque Isle after a two-vehicle accident at 8 a.m. Thursday on U.S. Route 1, near the intersection with Westfield Road.

Ronald Sherwood, 34, and Steve Lunney, 35, both of Presque Isle, died in the collision of a car and a tractor-trailer truck. Sidney Sherwood, 66, also of Presque Isle, was hospitalized, according to state police and hospital officials.

Fog and driver inattention contributed to the accident, according to Trooper David McPherson of Mars Hill.

Sidney Sherwood, operating a 1985 Chevy Impala, was traveling south on U.S. Route 1, with his son, Ronald Sherwood, and Lunney as passengers, when he made a left turn on Westfield Road, crossing in front of a 1977 Peterbilt tractor-trailer unit, driven by Christopher McCabe, 24, of Middleborough, Mass., said McPherson.

The empty tractor-trailer was northbound on Route 1 when it hit the right passenger side of the vehicle, causing both vehicles to travel about 50 feet to the right side of the road, according to McPherson.

The car was demolished on impact, and the tractor-trailer received an estimated $1,000 damage to the front portion, said McPherson.

The Presque Isle Fire Department’s hydraulic extrication tool was used to remove the car roof and other vehicle parts, said McPherson.

The accident remained under investigation, McPherson said.

Responding to the accident were two Crown ambulances, Troopers John Bailey of Mars Hill and John Cote of Houlton, Sgt. Darrell Ouellette of Stockholm, and Mike Pelletier, state motor vehicle inspector. The sheriff’s department provided traffic control.
