Thompson, Hill help Braves win 2

Men’s College Soccer

PRESQUE ISLE – Gary Thompson and Jason Hill each scored second-half goals to lift the Husson College Braves past the University of Maine-Presque Isle Wildcats in men’s soccer action Sunday.

Husson beat the University of Maine-Fort Kent on Saturday 4-2.

Hill and Matt Stelzer picked up assists for the 2-1-1 Braves in Sunday’s game. Jason Brewer made seven saves on nine shots.

For the 1-3 Owls, Darren Allen made five saves on 14 shots.

UM-Fort Kent splits weekend

At Fort Kent, the host University of Maine-FK Bengals came back to beat the Unity College Rams 4-0 on Sunday after losing to the Husson College Braves on Saturday 4-2.

In Sunday’s game, Chuck Michaud scored two goals to lift 1-2 UMFK by Unity. John Mattola and Blake Lindstedt each chipped in with a goal and an assist. Goalie Brian Fay made six saves on six shots.

For the 0-3 Rams, goalie Rick Dreves finished with 26 saves on 30 shots.

In Saturday’s game, Guy Guy Mpeye and Matt Porter each scored a goal and had an assist apiece as the Braves downed the Bengals. Matt Stelzer and Chris Steppe each contributed a goal with Jason Hill and Gary Thompson each notching an assist. Goalie Jason Brewer made three saves on five shots.

Mattola scored off a direct kick for UMFK and Lindstedt converted a penalty kick. Netkeeper Shawn St. Peter finished with six saves on 11 shots.

UMPI 3, Unity 0

At Presque Isle on Saturday, John Hafford scored once and assisted on another as the host Owls shut out the Rams.

Darren Clukey started the scoring with an assist going to Darren Collins. Justis Murchison scored the second UMPI goal set up by Hafford. Hafford closed out the scoring, connecting on a pass from Wayne Martin. Darren Allen made three saves on four shots.

Rick Dreves was busy in goal for the 0-2 Rams, making 23 saves on 39 shots.

NMTC 4, CMTC 1

At Presque Isle on Sunday, Scott Gendreau scored twice to power the Northern Maine Technical College Falcons past the Central Maine Technical College Mustangs of Auburn.

Bernard Fortin and Keith Fortin also netted goals for the 2-0 Falcons. Gerry Caron and Kent Smith each added an assist. Kevin Young made five saves on nine shots.

Andy Giroux recorded 36 saves on 54 shots for 0-1 CMTC.

Green Mtn. 10, St. Joe’s 0

At Standish Saturday, Alan Madded scored a hat trick while John Lynch and Rich Grant tallied two goals each as Green Mountain of Poultney, Vt., rolled to the victory.

Brian Davies, Scott Morin, and Hewett Wright added solo goals for Green Mountain (2-0-1). Jeff Mulligan made six saves, facing nine shots.

For St. Joe’s, 0-1, goalies Brian Carr and Matt Libby combined for 17 saves, facing 28 shots.

UMF 10, UMM 0

At Farmington Sunday, freshman striker Robin Gronvold scored four goals and another freshman striker, Tom Ziebart, added two goals and an assist to pace UM-Farmington to its win in a mutual season-opener.

Dave Long and Aaron Berthiaume had a goal and an assist apiece for the winners. Leigh Ellis and Jason Simpson had the other goals.

Goalies Dan Finnen and Nate Pickens combined for three saves.

Chris Gardner had 11 stops for UM-Machias.

Maine 0, Rhode Island 0 (OT)

At Kingston, R.I., Sunday Maine junior goalkeeper Seb D’Appolonia made 11 saves to extend his 1992 scoreless string to 188 minutes as the Bears tied the Rams.

D’Appolonia made his 11 saves on 24 shots while URI goalie Corey Marpet made 13 stops on 16 shots.

Maine is now 1-0-1 while URI is 1-1-1.
