Hampden girls win state title Ages 11-12 team heading to Eastern Seaboard tournament

BANGOR – The Hampden-Newburgh-Winterport All-Stars beat Saco 13-2 for the state softball title for ages 11-12 Wednesday and are headed to the Eastern Seaboard tourney in Georgetown, Del.

Michelle Wells helped Hampden claim the championship as she limited Saco to two hits while striking out 11 and walking five. Ashley Gott backed Wells with a strong offensive performance as she doubled, singled three times and drove in three runs.

Eva Shannon, Lacey Littlefield and Wells each chipped in with a single and scored a run for Hampden.

Kayla Nielsen notched a two-run single for Saco and Jess Boynton singled.

Hampden is leaving for the Eastern Seaboard tourney Friday night and will play its first game against Connecticut on Sunday.

The team is guaranteed a minimum of five games in the tourney and is attempting to raise funds for its trip. Team members will be staying at the tourney for eight days and need to raise funds for meals and lodging.

During this busy sports season, the NEWS asks that managers and coaches for the home teams promptly report the games. Games can be reported starting at 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Games can not be reported on Saturday.
