Bangor ousts Saco from junior tourney

WINDHAM – Ben Silver hit a three-run home run as Bangor scored all of its runs in the first inning and held off Saco 4-3 in the Junior League baseball state tournament at Windham High School Sunday.

Saco was eliminated from the tourney for 13- and 14-year-olds.

Tyson Barry hit a pair of singles for Bangor and Matt Currier singled with an RBI.

At Windham Saturday, Chris Maguire hit a single and double with two RBIs for Bucksport.

Joe Robicheau doubled with a RBI for Bucksport and Corey Cushing hit a double with two RBIs. Chad Cottrell and Matt Allison each singled and doubled.

Keith Clifford and Gordy Webb both hit a pair of singles and Mike Varney and Ben Estabrook singled.

At East Biddeford, Jeremy Dunham’s three-run homer keyed a four-run first-inning rally and gave Josh Astbury all the run support he would need as Astbury spun a two-hitter in the state tourney.

Astbury struck out nine and walked three.

Noah Dow belted an RBI double for the winners.

Waldo County 11, York 1

At East Biddeford, Tyler Miles hurled a 15-strikeout one-hitter and his mates backed him with a 12-hit attack as Waldo County triumphed.

Miles allowed just a fourth-inning single to Matt Haight and four walks.

Nick Beal’s two-run single keyed a three-run first inning and Nathan Adams walloped a three-run homer in the sixth.

Adams had a single to go with his homer and Beal had two base hits. Tom Cameron had a double and two singles, Marcus Benjamin tripled and singled and Matt Bagley hit a run-scoring double.

Westbrook 3, Old Town 2

At East Biddeford, Steve Lebel’s sharp single to left with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning delivered Zack Johnson from third and gave Westbrook its win over Old Town.

Two walks and a wild pitch set the stage for Lebel’s game-winning hit.

Shawn McAlpine went the distance for the win, allowing four hits while striking out six and walking three.

Lebel had two singles and Johnson had an RBI single for Westbrook.

Matt Jones had a run-scoring triple and scored the tying run for Old Town on a botched relay. He also had another base hit.

At Scarborough, Jamie Gomm pitched a one-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two, and she aided her own cause with five hits and five runs batted in the state tourney.

Gomm had a triple, double and three singles.

Erin Porter knocked in four runs with a triple and four singles. Taylor Lauritsen and Jesse Strout each contributed two singles with Lauritsen collecting two RBIs.

Nia Maguire’s fourth-inning single was the only hit for Acadian.

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Saco scored all of its runs in the third inning with two sacrifice flies and by RBI hits by Matt Grenier and Jordan Scully in the state tourney.

Shawn Compson pitched a complete game for Saco as he allowed only one run on three hits and struck out four. Grenier hit a double and single with a RBI and Jordan Scully hit a pair of singles with a RBI.

Dan Hilts doubled for Coastal.

South Portland 9, Auburn 8

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Tony Dicenso hit a sacrifice fly to knock in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning for South Portland.

Andrew Wood hit three singles with a RBI for South Portland and Dicenso doubled and singled with an RBI.

Brandon Elie had two singles for Auburn and Dave Roberge hit a two-run double.

Eastern Regional

Connecticut 7, Maine 0

At Laurel, Del., Brittany Conners struck out seven batters and threw a one-hitter to lead Connecticut past Maine in the opener of the round robin Eastern Regional tournament Sunday.

Maine will play Massachusetts Monday at 6 p.m.

Amanda Palmer’s fourth-inning double broke up Conners’ no-hit bid. Lacey Littlefield struck out eight hitters.

Anna Levesque drove in five RBIs with a three-run homer in the third and a triple in the fifth.
