BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I’ve watched for nearly three months as the selfish naysayers of Clifton and Eddington tossed innuendo and deliberate disinformation around the district in order to accomplish their mean-spirited goal — defeat of the Eddington School Construction Referendum. Until those of you who participated in this shameful display recognize the need, the rest of us will carry the guilt and shame for you.

In direct response to Carol French (Our Readers Write, Nov. 14), where were you when we were looking for citizen-volunteers for the construction committee? Where were you during public hearings (held at various times throughout the day)? And, finally, if you were so concerned about this issue, why did you never once call me to express your feelings or ask for accurate information?

As one of your representatives on the SAD 63 board of directors, let me tell you that the board does, in fact, understand all components of the word “NO.” Even when it is spoken in defiance of logic, common sense and good judgment.

As one resident recently said to me, what the voters have rejected is more than just money. They have refused to accept the wisdom that, in education, environment is every bit as important as function. The board takes great pride in the tremendously dedicated staff at Eddington Consolidated, as well as Holbrook and Holden Schools. They provide exceptional function. What you have done, Ms. French, is prevent the Eddington staff from providing our children with even more through a much improved environment.

The request for additional funds is DEAD. Make no mistake. The board has no intention of bringing it back a third time. You, and those who share your narrow views, have won the day. I ask only that you do yourself and your neighbors one favor: Remember the effort expended in defeating this referendum. When many of the repair and replace items in it come back to you at a higher cost and you have to foot the entire expense, don’t expect any sympathy. The school could have had it all — at no cost to the local taxpayers, but you told the state to keep its money! Rest assured you and your allies will rue the day you cast the votes you did.
