Two Maine dalers win national TAC XC titles

There is good news and bad news to report from last weekend’s The Athletics Congress Junior Olympic Cross Country National Championships in Mobile, Ala.

The good news is, of the 60 Maine runners entered, two won national age-group championships; 13 earned All-American honors by finishing in the Top 25 in their respective divisions; and, of the four girls and five boys age-division teams from Maine, two finished second, one fourth, one sixth, two 10th and one 16th. Two divisions had single entries.

The bad news is that while this information is available, complete results will not be forthcoming for some time.

Meet directors in Mobile did not have photocopying equipment available at the site to reproduce results of the more than 2,000 competitors, according to Marty Thornton of the Maine TAC.

Final results are to be mailed to state TAC officials at a later date, she said.

Running for Aroostook Cumberland Express, Jodi Lake of Livermore Falls finished first in the girls 15-16 age division to win that title with a time of 19 minutes, 7 seconds, over a 5K course.

Jeremy Howard of Farmington won the same age division for boys with a 5K time of 16:04 while competing for the Lakers team.

Sara Fieweger of Hope and Heather Russo of Farmington, running for the Lakers in the 17-18 girls division, earned All-America honors along with Lake and Howard. Fieweger finished sixth and Russo 12th, leading their team to a fourth place overall finish.

Lake’s 15-16 ACE team finished second overall behind her and the All-American performances of Eleanore Anderson, Houlton, 13th; Jessica Plourde, Wesbroook, 18th; Meg Randall, Westbrook, 20th; and Jean Delmonaco, Calais, 22nd.

The ACE girls 13-14 team also finished second nationally behind the leadership of two All-Americans: Robin Bates, Winslow, 14th; and Danielle Donovan, Presque Isle, 19th.

The Lakers boys 15-16 team finished sixth with Howard and All-American Brian Christianson of Readfield, who finished 20th.

Although recording no Top 25 finishes, the Lakers 11-12 boys team finished sixth.

Scott Laliberte of Augusta led the Lakers 17-18 boys with an All-American 13th-place finish. The team finished 10th overall, as did the boys 13-14 team led by Top 25 finisher Ethan Higbee of Topsham, who came in 24th.
