The Monson Finnish Farmers’ Club and the Monson Preservation Society have joined forces to present an afternoon of folk and bluegrass music at Monson’s first Music Fest, set for noon-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Vainio field on the Blanchard Road in Monson.
Playing at the event will be Myllarit, Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys, Old Grey Goose and Michael Cooney.
Myllarit, from Petrozavodsk in the republic of Karelia, northwest Russia, will be returning to Monson while on its fourth tour of New England and the Midwest. The seven-person, 16-instrument band plays Finnish, Karelian and North Russian folk tunes, as well as creating its own sound using elements of rock, jazz and world music. Banjo Dan and the Mid-nite Plowboys is a five-piece bluegrass band from Vermont.
Old Grey Goose, a Maine folk band, perform old-time country dance music and songs from Maine and the Maritimes, playing a variety of instruments. Michael Cooney has spent more than 35 years helping others to experience traditional folk music and the history behind songs.
Tickets are $12; children 12 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased at Lake Hebron Artisans and the Monson Town Office, both on Main Street. For information and tickets, call 997-3268 or 997-3641.
