San Pedro trips up Moscow

BANGOR – There is an aura of enthusiasm and intensity surrounding the Senior League Baseball team from San Pedro, Calif.

That’s because the West Region champions have come to Bangor intent on winning the Senior League World Series.

San Pedro took another step Monday toward earning a spot in the semifinals of the 10-team tournament, beating European champion Moscow, Russia, 6-1 in the early game of the day.

“Our motto is, ‘we want it all,’ so we play hard to get there,” said West coach Mike Sindicich.

San Pedro, now 2-0, has Tuesday off before resuming the schedule Wednesday at 10 a.m. against LaSalle, Ontario. It was Moscow’s tourney opener.

It wasn’t an easy victory Monday, but San Pedro was solid in all facets of the game. Four pitchers combined on a six-hitter, while the defense backed them with errorless play in the field.

Steve Taylor stroked three singles and drove in three runs to pace San Pedro. He also pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

“It’s great. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience right here,” Taylor said of his team’s obvious excitement. “This is what you work for.”

Taylor’s two-run single was a key blow during San Pedro’s three-run fifth that gave it a 5-1 lead. Daniel Stephenson doubled twice with an RBI, while Matt Garcia singled twice.

Moscow played solid ball, but was unable to string many hits together and stranded nine baserunners. The Russians mounted a big threat in the fourth when Maxim Shabanov doubled, Artem Chcherbakov singled and Sergey Karmushov walked, loading the bases.

San Pedro starter Juan Dorado was lifted in favor of Ricky Luna, who struck out three of the next four batters, allowing only Nikita Tokarev’s one-out, RBI single.

“Our defense is really strong,” Luna said. “Even if they get a hit, you don’t have to worry about it.”

The Russians turned double plays in the first, second and seventh innings.

Shabanov and Tokarev provided two hits each for Moscow.
