Winthrop, Erskine, Hyde, Rangeley win

AUGUSTA – The Winthrop boys captured their second straight Class C title while Erskine Academy collected the girls “C” crown in Western Maine finals at the Augusta Civic Center Saturday.

Winthrop rolled past Old Orchard Beach 91-61 and Erskine Academy of South China edged Madison 52-50.

Meanwhile, in WM Class D regional contests, the Hyde School of Bath tripped Valley of Bingham 50-41 for the boys championship and Rangeley stopped Valley for the girls crown 37-32.

Class D Boys

Hyde 50, Valley-Bingham 41

Chris Wescott scored 25 points to lift Hyde to its first regional title since ’81. Wescott injured his knee in a celebration following the game, but expects to play in Thursday’s state title game against Jonesport-Beals. Hyde is now 16-1.

For Valley, which finished at 17-4, Lance Sherman scored 19 points.

Class D Girls

Rangeley 37, Valley 32

Sarah Bicknell scored eight of her team-high 15 points in the third quarter to spark Rangeley to victory in the girls “D” title game. The Lakers improved their record to 20-1.

Christina Hobbs scored a game-high 16 points, with 13 in the first half, to pace Valley, which finished at 16-5.

Class C Girls

Erskine 52, Madison 50

Erskine held off a Madison rally to take the victory and remain unbeaten at 21-0.

Erskine took a 52-42 lead with 1:14 left, but Madison cut it to 52-50 with eight seconds left. Anna Nadeau then dribbled past the Madison press in the final seconds to secure the Erskine win.

Nadeau paced the winners with 19 points.

For Madison, which finished at 16-3, Andrea Clark scored 16 points and Audra Linkletter finished with a triple-double: 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 steals.
