34-year-old man killed in Maxfield mobile home fire

MAXFIELD — Raymond Cole Jr., 34, formerly of the Portland area, was the victim of a mobile home fire early Sunday morning in the rural community of Maxfield.

Howland Fire Chief Scott Wallace said that a woodstove-related fire destroyed an 8-foot-wide mobile home owned by Norris DeLong on the North Howland Road.

Fire in the 1950s vintage trailer was reported by DeLong about 4 a.m. Sunday. Cole’s body was discovered near the door where it was believed he was overcome by smoke. Firefighters believe Cole may have been awakened by the fire, but was unable to get out.

Firefighters arrived within 10 minutes of the call, Wallace said. Firefighters from Lincoln and Passadumkeag provided mutual aid. Fire trucks remained at the scene for about three hours, while Wallace and Investigator Jim Ellis of the State Fire Marshal’s Office remained through the morning.

According to Wallace, Cole moved into the trailer-home on Friday. He was reportedly unemployed and recently had worked in Bangor. The home was destroyed and was not covered by insurance.
