Waterville taxi driver dies after collision

WATERVILLE – An Oakland cabdriver died Thursday morning after her taxi slammed into the rear of a dual-wheel utility truck, police said.

Janet Rackleff, 47, was driving south on College Avenue when she hit the Maingas truck driven by 39-year-old Edward McCausland of North Vassalboro, authorities told the Morning Sentinel in Waterville.

Emergency workers tried to remove Rackleff from the compressed cab. But the driver for Pine Tree Taxi of Fairfield was unconscious when police arrived at the scene, said Scott Palmer of the Waterville Police Department.

Rackleff began speaking as she was moved into an ambulance, but she died soon after arriving at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Palmer said.

McCausland, who was driving a truck carrying propane cylinders, was not injured in the crash.

Rackleff was not wearing a seat belt, and there was no indication she applied the brakes before hitting the truck, Palmer said.
