PRESQUE ISLE — An interactive video conference, “Successfully Employing People with Disabilities: What Managers need to Know,” will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, in Christie Lecture Hall at Northern Maine Technical College.
Conference proceedings will be transmitted live via satellite to sites throughout the country from the Public Broadcasting Service’s Adult Learning Satellite Service and Mentor Media.
The conference will address employment provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act which became effective July 26, 1992, and affects organizations with 15 or more employees. The act requires businesses and governments to provide equal access and opportunity for employment to individuals with disabilities, according to conference organizers.
Participants in the video conference may view the program, and call in questions to a panel of national human resource leaders. Topics addressed during the program include hiring; training and supervising people with disabilities; disability awareness and sensitivity; how to rewrite job descriptions and applications; how to ensure assessibility and determine reasonable accommodations; how to avoid discriminiation in job assignment, training, evaluation and promotion; and what the law requires.
The cost of the program is $18, payable at the door. Information is available by contacting the NMTC continuing education department.
