Crocker in top swim meet

Portland native Ian Crocker has been selected to compete for the U.S. at the Pan Pacific Championships in Yokohama, Japan.

The meet, considered one of the toughest international competitions in an Olympics off-year, runs from Aug. 24-29. Countries sending swimmers include the U.S., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and China.

Crocker, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and a junior at the University of Texas, made the 26-man roster by virtue of his performance at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships earlier this month. Crocker won a gold and two silver medals.

The Cheverus of Portland graduate was a member of the first-place 400-meter medley relay team and added silver medals in the 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.

Crocker won an Olympic gold medal in 2000 as a member of the world record-breaking 400 medley relay team and broke the American record with a fourth-place finish in 100 butterfly.

Earlier this year Crocker won his second-straight 100-yard butterfly title at the NCAA championships, setting the American record in that event.

Crocker also competed on the 1999 Pan Pacific team.
