Sirmans, Jones possible draftees

Two University of Maine football players who will be sticking close to their telephones Monday during the later rounds of the NFL Draft are tailback Ben Sirmans of East Orange, N.J., and offensive tackle Dan Jones of Malden, Mass.

According to UM head coach Jack Cosgrove, both players have been well-scouted by NFL teams and may get a shot.

“I think they’re both in late-round to free-agent situations,” said Cosgrove Friday. “I think both are going to get a chance to show what they can do.”

Cosgrove said since former UM head coach Kirk Ferentz left in February to become the offensive line coach with the Cleveland Browns, Jones (6-foot-7, 294 pounds) may get a long look by that club.

“I know Kirk has indicated they have an interest,” Cosgrove said, noting Cincinnati has also shown interest in Jones.

Sirmans (5-9, 205 pounds) has drawn the interest of New England and Tampa Bay, according to Cosgrove. Sirmans ran for 1,214 yards last season, thanks in part to Jones’ blocking.

“We’ll see what happens. We’re hoping good things happen for both of them. They deserve it,” Cosgrove said.
