Five charged in break-in at Princeton club

PRINCETON – Deputies say five people summoned during the weekend are accused of cooking some steak and eggs before trashing the Princeton Rod and Gun Club.

The five were charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief.

Washington County sheriff’s Deputy Paul Comeau said Monday that Mariah Stevens, 20, and Jay Moholland, 22, both of Princeton, and Indian Township residents Patrick Tyrell, 19, Nakoma Polches, 20, and Stephen LaCoote, 22, allegedly broke into the popular local club on Aug. 13.

He said they stole 10 cases of soda and two cases of beer.

The incident was discovered the next day by club member Dale Speed of Princeton, who went to the clubhouse in a remote area off West Street and found the front door had been kicked out.

When Speed investigated, he found the food storage area had been broken into and eggs and other food had been thrown around the kitchen.

Speed notified the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

“They cooked themselves up a big feed,” Comeau said. “They then broke eggs and trashed the kitchen area and basically made a big mess.”

Comeau said entry had been gained through a bathroom window. Once inside, he said, the five allegedly kicked the front door out rather than opening it. He estimated damage at more than $500.

Residents who live on West Street told police that around 5:30 a.m. Aug. 14 they saw five people walking away from the Rod and Gun Club road.

He said that he had received telephone calls about the incident from the public.

“A lot of people were really ticked off about this. Everything they do at the gun club is for kids,” he said. “A lot of people volunteer to work out there.”

The club has a history of holding suppers and other events to raise money to send youngsters to camp and for other projects.

The four men and one woman were summoned and are expected to appear in 4th District Court in Calais on Oct. 8.

Sgt. Donny Smith of the Washington County Sheriff’s Department assisted Comeau at the scene.
