EAST RYEGATE, Vt. – A New Hampshire man has bought the idled Kimberly-Clark Corp. paper mill for $100.
Purchaser Ronald Morgan of Evergreen Paper in Concord, N.H., did not return calls Wednesday.
But George Robson, who works for the state economic development department, confirmed Morgan bought the plant. And there is a new sign hanging on the building that says, “Evergreen Paper Company East Ryegate Mill.”
About 80 people lost their jobs last winter when the Kimberly-Clark mill stopped operating. The company stripped $3 million worth of machinery from the plant.
The property was valued at roughly $500,000 earlier this year, Ryegate Town Clerk Marsha Nelson said.
According to documents, Morgan bought about 26 acres, 80,000 square feet of factory space, buildings and improvements, flowage rights and easements.
Ryegate Selectman Paul Keenan, a former Kimberly-Clark employee, gave Morgan a tour of the facility in May. He said Morgan showed interest in the mill after Ryegate voters rejected an offer from Kimberly-Clark to buy the property for $100.
“I am tickled to death that it has been sold, and I am tickled to death that we are going to get some jobs in here,” Keenan said.
Town officials have other reasons to be pleased: They received $3,793.20 for real estate taxes, $2,500 payable to the state of Vermont for transfer tax, and $49 for recording fees from attorney William P. Neylon’s office along with the documents.
