MILO — It may have been a bright, sunny weekend, but for more than 20 volunteers, it was a hot, hard day’s work.
A newly constructed boat landing was put in place Saturday at the Milo Water Front Park on the shores of Sebec Lake in the heart of downtown Milo. The funds for the facility were part of a grant received from the state for the park.
The 14-boat capacity landing was designed and built by Fred Wiles. The suggestion for the facility came to the Milo selectmen from members of the Sebec River Association. Officers of the association include Kirby Robertson, president; Joseph Zamboni, vice president; Janet Richards, secretary, and Trelba Rollins, treasurer.
Jane Jones, Milo town manager, applied for the grant in the spring of 1992. The award, totaling $5,300, was received in the fall of 1992. The landing on the left of the park is 72-feet by 5-feet while the section on the right is 32-feet by 5-feet.
The structure was built and put together at Wiles’ property. Each piece was numbered and then the structure was dismantled. It was reassembled Saturday.
Association members said there would be no assignments made as to what boats could be parked where. They hope boaters are able to work together so assignments will not have to be made. There are two facilities left open for unloading and one is accessible to the handicapped.
Robertson said the facility would be maintained by the SRA, although it is owned by the town of Milo.
Membership in the SRA is $10 per family. Richards encouraged people interested in the use and preservation of the river to become involved in membership.
