BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

In response to the (May 7) editorial, “Belts and Helmets,” I am offering a few ideas for consideration on the issue of helmet laws.

We hear the cry for the need to strap on helmets by many who don’t ride motorcycles. Where do they get their information as to the safety factors they proclaim — from scientific research, personal experience, or what? If the safety issue was looked at objectively, possibly the hassle of adding another law to limit personal choice and then going to the expense of enforcing it would be unnecessary.

The other cry from the “pro” helmet camp is the burden on our health care costs. Why stop with helmet laws? Let’s pass additional legislation on behalf of smokers, drinkers, and others who “burden” the health care system.

I wonder how many proponents of the helmet law are burdens on our health care system in some way. I hope while yo are having your next cigarette, drink, or loading up on a high-fat meal, you think carefully how to vote on helmet legislation. Gary Wright Rockport
