Mass. motorist arrested on alcohol, drug charges

A Massachusetts motorist who was seen driving erratically on Interstate 95 early Thursday morning was arrested by Orono police on alcohol- and drug-related charges.

Scott Kent, 19, of Duxbury, Mass., came to the attention of police after a fellow motorist called in to report Kent’s black Jeep Wrangler had passed him and was all over the road, said Orono police Officer Josh Ewing. The officer caught up with the Jeep just as it was pulling out of the Big Apple convenience store, and he followed it until Kent pulled into a driveway on Mayo Street.

Out of the Jeep, Kent was unsteady on his feet and failed to follow instructions during field sobriety tests. Kent also smelled of alcohol and his eyes were glassy and his speech slurred, Ewing said. The officer found an open beer in the center console and eight or nine full beers on the floor of the Jeep. When Kent was searched, a marijuana pipe was found in a pants pocket.

Kent was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal transportation of liquor by a minor and possession of an open alcohol container on a public way.

A Bucksport woman was charged with drunken driving early Thursday morning after her car nearly struck another vehicle on Odlin Road in Bangor.

The driver of the other vehicle was a Bangor police sergeant who had finished up a private police detail at the Ramada Inn and called in the erratic driver. Sgt. Paul Kenison reported that while he was heading north on Odlin Road about 1:20 a.m., a car heading south drifted to one side of the road, overcorrected and crossed the centerline headed right for him. Kenison pulled his truck to the right to avoid being hit, and contacted police on duty in the area.

Officer Steve Jordan stopped the car on Interstate 395 and spoke to the driver, 22-year-old Casey Commeau, who admitted to having three drinks. Jordan noted that Commeau was unsteady on her feet throughout field sobriety tests and he arrested her, charging Commeau with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. An Intoxilyzer test registered her blood alcohol content at 0.14 percent or more than 11/2 times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Brewer police were called to Hillcrest Drive on Wednesday night after a resident reported seeing three suspicious men walking around.

Officer Rich Smith said he searched the area but didn’t immediately find anyone. Smith continued to search the area but with his cruiser’s lights off. This allowed him to come within about 50 yards of a vehicle off Clover Lane which had its dome light on and driver side door open.

Smith said a man inside the car saw him and ran off.

Smith chased him, but the man got away. The officer found two sets of footprints on nearby driveways.

In all, four vehicles were reported broken into with items taken including CDs, change and a man’s ring.

No one was caught.

A motorist told Brewer police that while she was stopped at the intersection of Wilson Street and Parkway South on Wednesday night, a group of youths pulled up beside her and that she was struck in the face by a dinner roll.

The incident is still under investigation and police have a suspect vehicle they are looking for, said Cpl. Keith Emery.
