UM Bears split pair on road

The University of Maine field hockey team split a pair of games to open the season this weekend. Maine blanked St. Louis University 5-0 Sunday in St. Louis, but lost 3-1 to Southwest Missouri State in Springfield on Saturday.

On Sunday, Skowhegan’s Tara Bedard scored three goals for the 1-1 Black Bears to shut out 0-1 St. Louis. Kristy Ferran and Karly Bundy each scored goals for Maine, while Jen Johnstone had two assists and Kim Leo also assisted a goal.

On Saturday, Bethany Henrick of Southwest Missouri State scored first with an unassisted goal at 20:15. Gabby Gomez scored their second goal and Henrick scored the third goal for 1-0 Southwest Missouri State.

Jen Johnstone tied the game for the Black Bears at one a piece at 21:36. The goal was assisted by Bedard and Kim Leo. Jaye Lance made three saves in the first half for the 0-1 University of Maine while Colbey Smith stopper three shots in the second half.

Women’s soccer

Husson loses pair

At Immaculata, Pa., Wilmington College won its season opener Saturday with a 3-1 win over Husson College, while Kristin Johnston scored three goals to lead Goldey-Beacom College past Husson 7-1 Sunday.

On Sunday, Amelia Shane, Megan O’Donnell, and Michelle Banco each scored a goal for Goldey-Beacom. Carrie L’Italien made no saves.

Deidra Ham scored a goal for Husson and Meg Taylor saved 22 of 29 shots.

On Saturday, Jen O’Brien and Sue Kerr scored goals for Wilmington as Ashley Marquisity saved 10 of 16 shots.

Melissa Achorn scored on a Ham assist and Taylor notched 16 saves on 20 shots.

Volleyball

Black Bears split

At Orono, the University of Maine split a pair of matches Saturday at the Sea-Sun Invitational volleyball tournament.

The Black Bears downed Saint Peter’s 3-2 after winning the first two games and then taking the fifth game 15-9.

Afterward, Temple University swept Maine 3-0.

In the first match, Leah Guidinger led Maine with 20 digs and 22 kills. Kaili Jordan had 16 digs and 10 kills while Carmen Gabriel posted a team-high 38 sets and also had 18 kills. Claire Poliquin had 14 kills and 12 digs.

Dotcheva Tzvetomila led Saint Peter’s with 18 kills and 15 digs.

The final match score was 30-18, 30-25, 22-30, 26-30 and 15-9.

In the second match, Xu Yun had 12 kills and 11 digs as the Owls swept Maine 30-16, 30-20, and 30-17. Alison Runk led the team with 24 sets.

Maine was paced by Gabriel, who had eight digs and eight kills. Guidinger was held to eight kills while freshman Ashley Marble of Woodland had 22 sets.

Men’s soccer

Fairleigh Dickinson 3, Maine 0

At Hamden, Conn., Sunday, Carlos Alarcon, Aaron Paye, and Dirceau Hurtado each scored a goal to lead Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights of Teaneck, N.J. past the Black Bears.

Andrew Nucifora saved seven of 11 shots for 1-0-1 FDU, ranked 14th in the most recent national poll.

Josh Sjostrom saved six of 18 shots for the Bears.

UMFK wins kickoff classic

At Presque Isle, Evan Watson and Ramiro Rodriguez each scored unassisted goals to lead the University of Maine-Fort Kent Bengals to a 2-0 victory over UMaine-Presque Isle in Sunday afternoon’s Powerade Kickoff Classic championship game.

On Sunday, Rodriguez scored on a direct kick in the second half after Watson took a goalie deflection and knocked it back for a first-half goal.

Chad Bouchard saved two of three shots for the 2-0 Bengals while Tim Dolley turned back four of six shots for the 1-1 Owls.
