Each year 100,000 dolphins are being brutally killed by tuna nets. This is because dolphins and tuna are well-known traveling companions, and when fishermen close their nets to capture the tuna all of the dolphins nearby are also captured and usually drowned or strangled.

Scientists are baffled by the fact that dolphins that are lucky enough to escape don’t communicate to the others how to get out.

Other experiments are being tested on having different sounds come from underneath the fishing boat to scare away the dolphins. They are also trying new styles of tuna nets. So far there is not much luck.

So, until scientists come up with a very effective way to cut down on the dolphin brutality, fishermen help by using more effective nets. We as citizens should help by boycotting or cutting down on the amount of tuna fish products we buy. Maybe that would give fishermen an incentive. Sharla Jakacky, age 13 Old Town
