I-95 car-moose crash hurts 2 in Island Falls

ISLAND FALLS – A Fort Kent couple escaped serious injury Sunday when their car struck a moose on Interstate 95.

Levitte Ouellette, 52, and his wife, Sandra, 48, were traveling north at about 8:20 p.m. when their 1996 Buick struck a cow moose that had walked onto the highway near the I-95 offramp in Island Falls, according to Aroostook County sheriff’s Deputy Mike Montpetit.

The deputy said the impact of the crash knocked the moose’s legs out from under the animal and it crashed down onto the roof of the car, caving it in.

“They’re lucky to be alive,” Montpetit said Monday.

Levitte Ouellette suffered only a cut on his hand and his head. He was able to get out of the car on his own. His wife, who was hit on the head, had to be extricated from the wreck by the Island Falls Fire Department using hydraulic rescue equipment.

The Island Falls ambulance took her to Houlton Regional Hospital, and she was treated and later released.

The moose was killed and the car was demolished in the accident.

Trooper Greg Burns of the Maine State Police assisted.
