UMaine’s Chad White tabbed All-American

University of Maine senior center fielder Chad White, who was the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year and an All-New England choice, was named a second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on Friday.

“Every award has been a surprise to me and this one outshines them all. To be chosen one of the best college players around is really kind of amazing. I never thought I’d get anything like that,” said Brewer’s White, who hit a team-leading .354 with two homers, three triples, 11 doubles, 38 runs batted in and a school-record 35 stolen bases.

White also said he was pleased with his season.

“I was very happy with it,” said White. “I wish I had hit a few more homers but I wasn’t swinging for them. After the first couple of weeks, I knew I wasn’t going to hit many homers so I just tried to get on base and score runs.”

White, a former righthanded hitter who became a switch-hitter two years ago, scored 49 runs which was second most on the team. He said he played with much more confidence this season thanks to playing in the Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League last summer “where I was able to work on different things.”

He has not been drafted as yet but is hoping he will get selected or will be able to obtain a free-agent contract.

“I love the game and I don’t care about the money. I just want to play,” said the speedy White, who developed into an exceptional center fielder with outstanding range.
