Floats, activities sought for Dexterfest

DEXTER — Area organizations are urged to contact Dexterfest organizers as soon as possible so that their activities may be included in this year’s annual holiday schedule.

According to Bertha Fanjoy, Dexterfest coordinator, the annual Dexterfest celebration, this year scheduled for July 1-4, is an excellent time for organizations to hold fund-raisers. Although many organizations have made plans for the festival, there is plenty of room for others to hold activities during the four days of events, she said. Concession stands, selling balloons, or children’s games are some of the fund-raisers not included in this year’s listing, she said.

People interested in holding a fund-raiser may contact Fanjoy at 924-7505.

The four-day event starts Thursday, July 1, with a tennis tournament through the Dexter Recreation Department. Contact Ed Walker at 924-7351 to register.

Also on July 1, an ice cream social, titled, “The Oldsters Meet the Youngsters,” will be held at 2 p.m. at the Dexter Nursing Home. The event will be open to children ages 1-4. Prizes will be awarded to each child who attends.

On Friday, July 2, an evening of comedy and music will be featured at 7 p.m. at the First Universalist Church. For information, call Dave Greenham at 924-5278.

An art show and sale will be held at the Abbott Memorial Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 3. To reserve a space, contact the library or 924-5278.

The Best Pizza Contest in Dexter will held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, in front of the Dexter Town Council chambers. The event is sponsored by WDME-Radio.

Face painting will be offered next to Kitchens and Bath by the Wassookeag School, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, July 3.

At noon Saturday, July 3, the Central Maine Cubs will face the Molunkus Travelers at Crosby Park for an Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball game.

An Old Home Tea will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, July 3, for current and former members of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah.

The Mid-Maine Cloggers will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 3, downtown. A chicken pie supper will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. Fireworks will be set off at 8:45 p.m.

Two parades will be held on Sunday, July 4. The annual boat parade starts at 10 a.m., led by Helen and Paul Clukey. The street parade will start at 1 p.m. with line-up at 12:30 p.m. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to participants. Fanjoy said the Novak family, an annual participant in the parade, is putting out the challenge this year for other families to get involved.

A lot more floats are needed, Fanjoy said, and she encourages people to submit an entry in one of the six areas of competition: best family float, best commercial float, best organizational float, best use of music in a float, best youth entry and funniest float.
