Mint agrees to redesign Maine’s quarter

AUGUSTA – The U.S. Mint has agreed to redesign the Maine quarter that’s due to be circulated next year to reflect the original design more closely, U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said Thursday.

Collins, R-Maine, said U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore told her the quarter would be redesigned to more accurately reflect the original artwork by Daniel Carr.

The design featured the Pemaquid Lighthouse and the schooner Victory Chimes, the largest vessel in Maine’s windjammer fleet.

The schooner was changed to a two-masted vessel in the final design and critics said it looked like a different vessel. The new design will add a third mast to the ship and raise ground under the lighthouse, Collins said.

Gov. Angus King and Collins had asked the Mint if changes could be made.
