CAMBRIDGE — This community’s annual summer festival and major scholarship fund-raiser will be held Saturday, June 26.
According to Hank Harrington, one of the organizers of Cambridge Days, the event is held annually to raise money by the Cambridge Square and Compass Club to fund four-year scholarships for deserving area high school graduates.
Last year, $2,500 was awarded and raised to fund the program.
Events will get under way Saturday with a parade. Anyone interested in participating should plan on arriving at the start-up location near the downtown before 9 a.m.
The popular lumberjack contests start at 10 a.m. at the field next to Dale Burdin’s home.
Contests will include: the Jack and Jill cross-cut; the men’s cross-cut; the bucksaw cross-cut; a log rolling competition; two chain saw competitions; the water-boil competition; and the tree-felling competition. At noon, beano will start at the Grange Hall.
At 1 p.m. a new event to Cambridge Days will get under way. The Carquest Tractor Pull will be sponsored at the Burdin field by Carquest of Dexter and Dover-Foxcroft.
According to Harrington, the fastest five-man team to pull a Ferguson tractor 100 feet will take the first-place prize of $100. The second-place finisher will receive $50 and the third-place finisher will receive $25. If a tie results, there will be a “pull-off.”
Each five-member team needs to sign up before 12:30 p.m. to be eligible to compete and each team must have a captain. There is a registration fee of $10 per team. Participants can wear anything on their feet to improve their traction for the event, according to Harrington, including cleats or tire chains.
More information is available by calling Harrington at 924-6264 or the Dexter or Dover-Foxcroft Carquests.
At 1:30 p.m., a number of children’s events will be held at the Burdin field.
One of the day’s big money makers for the club will be held at 4 p.m. The Great Cambridge Duck Drop is a contest where the winners will be determined by having their plastic ducks fall closest to a hole in the ground when dropped from a height.
The person whose duck falls closest to the hole will receive $200 with the second place finisher receiving $100 and the third place finisher, $50. Tickets are on sale throughout this week and on Saturday by contacting either Harrington or Dale Burdin. Each $1 buys one duck.
Saturday’s events will be capped off with a contra dance at 7 p.m. at the Grange Hall. Ticket prices are $3 for adults and $1 for children.
In the event of severe inclement weather, Cambridge Days will be held Saturday, July 10.
