ARTSHARE to unveil new artists’ workshops

Some people wear many hats, so you have to be careful, and make sure you know which hat they have on, when talking with them.

Susan Potters is one of those people, but she made it very clear she was wearing her hat as executive director of the Bangor Region Arts and Cultural Council when she called me the other day.

Potters invites members of the public to take advantage of the BRACC ARTSHARE program that met with great success when it was launched last June.

ARTSHARE was suspended for the summer, Potters said, but will reconvene 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.

ARTSHARE will continue to meet the second Tuesday of each month, she explained of “a gathering of the Greater Bangor region arts community,” which she added is “broadly defined to include the interested public as well.”

Each meeting features two or three speakers, representing different art forms.

The guest speakers at Tuesday’s session will be John Patches, director of the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono, Bangor painter Nina Jerome, and Sally Bates, marketing director for the Bangor Museum and Center for History.

“There will also be time for arts-related announcements and discussion from members of the audience,” Potters added.

Tables will be available for the placement of brochures from various organizations, refreshments will be served and admission is free!

ARTSHARE organizers were thrilled with the turnout for the first meeting last June and hope the program continues to serve as a monthly meeting place and an opportunity to exchange ideas and maintain contacts with other groups throughout the year.

At Tuesday’s meeting, ARTSHARE will unveil another BRACC program, ARTSHARE Studio Workshops, which Potters describes as “a program of art workshops for interested area residents given by local artists and craftspeople in their studios.”

Open to any artist in the Greater Bangor region, BRACC will help promote the workshops; a listing of fall workshops will be available at the Sept. 10 ARTSHARE meeting.

Artists wishing to have their workshop listing in the catalog, or residents wishing more information about any BRACC program, may call Potters at 990-2805 or email maaebangor@aol.com.

You are reminded that Bangor hairstylist Marit Cattelle will hold FunDay Sunday, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at YMCA Camp Pierce Webber on Emerson Mill Road in Hampden.

The event benefits fellow stylist Nancy Morey, who has cancer.

Activities include swimming, children’s games and an auction, and there will be lots of good food to eat.

Admission is $10 for adults and $25 per family, and tickets will be available at the gate.

A special program is being planned by the Bangor Garden Club, which will have its annual membership meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at the home of member Nancy Dawson, 205 Webster Ave., Bangor.

The BGC is active in the community with spring plantings at the Bangor Public Library, the Maine Veterans Home and other local sites and, each year, it is host to a spring motor coach trip to the Boston Flower Show.

Club members participate in weekly garden-planting times with children in the pediatric unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center, and many other garden-related activities.

BGC meets monthly, during the day, and invites speakers whose topics range from gardening to birds and the environment.

The club encourages community members to attend this special meeting, which will feature Jennifer Campbell of Hampden Floral.

Campbell will lead a workshop on creating corsages, explaining the varieties of design, plant and filling materials used to make traditional and contemporary corsages.

With Campbell’s assistance, each attendee will make a corsage.

Homemade refreshments will be served and members, especially, are encouraged to bring a friend to the first meeting of the 2002-2003 season.

For more information or directions, or to reserve your place for this meeting, call Pam Boisvert, 942-5026.

Members of the Penobscot Valley Ski Club invite you to their first meeting of the 2002-03 season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Hampden VFW Hall on Canoe Club Road in Hampden.

The guest speaker will be world traveler Dr. Bernie Dahl of Winterport.

Membership dues for this season will be accepted at the meeting. Individual dues are $20 and family memberships are $25.

You can also obtain a PVSC application at pvskiclub.org.

Pat Cammack reminds those who attend that you can sign up to volunteer for the PVSC Fall Ski Sale, which is Saturday, Oct. 19, at Bangor Parks and Recreation on Main Street in Bangor.
