Bowers’ goal lifts Dexter past Searsport 2-1

DEXTER – Sam Bowers’ goal on a Sean Towle assist lifted the Dexter Tigers by the Searsport Vikings 2-1 in the schoolboy soccer opener for both teams Friday.

Ben Lemieux scored the first Dexter goal on a penalty kick in the first half. Brian Hersey stopped 15 shots.

Orlar Chear tied the game at 1-1 for Searsport on an Ivan Lor assist later in the half. Kurt Lockhart made seven saves.

PCHS 2, Schenck 2 (2OT)

At East Millinocket, Piscataquis Community High School’s Jon Prescott and Schenck’s Seth Johnston each scored a pair of goals as the teams opened with a tie.

Johnston’s second goal knotted the game up at two apiece for the Wolverines of East Millinocket with 6:45 remaining. Tim Droxell assisted on Johnston’s goal in the first half. Mike Rossignol made 12 saves on 19 shots.

John Garrett-Young assisted on Prescott’s second goal of the game for the Pirates of Guilford. Josh Luellen made 12 saves on 19 shots.

Lawrence 2, Cony 1

At Fairfield, Kevin Hageman scored two goals to lift the Bulldogs by the Rams.

C.J. Perry assisted on the first goal and Brandon Grudda set up the second for the Bulldogs. Goalie Nate Novitz made 12 saves on 23 shots.

Artrell Blakely scored an unassisted goal for 0-1 Cony of Augusta and Ryan Conrad made five saves on 12 shots.

JV: Cony 2-0

Greenville 1, Richmond 0

At Richmond, Greenville’s Gregory Aucoin edged out Richmond’s Steve Wullaert in a battle of Class D goalies.

Aucoin blocked all 14 of Richmond’s shots on goal, while Wullaert blocked 18 of Greenville’s 19 shots. Rory Owens scored on a penalty kick with 34:26 remaining in the second half as the result of a handball call.

Penquis 4, Lee Academy 3

At Lee, Ben Webb scored an unassisted goal with 1:36 left to break a 3-3 tie for Penquis of Milo and give the Patriots a win in the mutual season opener.

Webb took a throw-in and kicked it off an opposing fullback for the game-winner. Justin Allen added two goals on assists from Adam Ballash and Colby Chase for the Patriots. Steven Kissel added an unassisted goal. Kevin Nason stopped seven of 14 shots.

David Rideout started the scoring for Lee Academy and added an assist on a goal by teammate Kent Doane. Gerry Worster added a goal and Kris King had 10 saves for the Pandas.

JV: Penquis 2-0

Belfast 3, MCI 1

At Manson Park in Pittsfield, Caleb Barnaby scored two goals and Aaron Cross added a goal and an assist as the Lions won the mutual opener.

John Boynton added an assist for Belfast while Chris Abbott and Collin Cunning combined to make nine saves on 10 shots.

Brandon Ring tallied off an Andrew Coffin feed for Maine Central Institute. Greg Duffley turned away eight of 18 shots.

So. Aroostook 3, Easton 2

At Easton, Corey Edkins’ second goal of the game, coming with just two seconds remaining in regulation, supplied undefeated and untied Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook with its sixth win.

Edkins scored from a goalmouth scramble.

Edkins converted a penalty kick in the first half and Jarred Grant also scored for Southern Aroostook. Jeff Boutilier made 11 saves.

James Desmond scored both goals for 2-6-1 Easton and Danny Warren made 11 stops.

Central Aroostook 4, Wisdom 1

At St. Agatha, Jon Boyd’s three first-half goals proved to be the difference as the Panthers of Mars Hill captured their second win.

Boyd’s goals were assisted by Pat Walsh, Josh Holcombe and Bryan Grew. Grew added a goal in the second half on an assist by Boyd. Adam Crue blocked 10 shots while in goal for 2-5-1 Central Aroostook.

Wayne Dyment scored Wisdom of St. Agatha’s goal on a Wesley Chasse assist. Kenny Corriveau stopped 14 shots for the 0-7 Pioneers.

East Grand 3, Lubec 1

At Lubec, Darius Parker scored all three goals – two unassisted – to lead the visiting Vikings of Danforth.

Steve Corey assisted on one goal for the 1-0 Vikings while goalie Chris Irish stopped six of seven shots.

Jamie O’Brien scored on a Jesse Brown assist and Jordan Hall had 21 saves on 26 shots for Lubec.

Washburn 2, Ashland 2 (2OT)

At Washburn, Bruce Oakes scored both goals, including the game-tying goal with 9:36 left in regulation, to help the visiting Ashland Hornets salvage a tie.

Brock Bessey assisted on one goal for 2-1-1 Ashland. Buck Pineau stopped 15 of 21 shots.

Dan Harris scored unassisted and Seth Milton scored on a header off a corner kick from Harris for the 4-2-3 Beavers. Jason Thompson had two saves on five shots.

Field hockey

Stearns 7, Bangor 0

At Millinocket, Jessica Osborne and Holly Franck scored two goals apiece as the Minutemen won in the season opener for both teams.

Sarah Connolly, Casey Popp and Sarah Saucier added goals for Stearns. Connolly and Osborne also picked up assists and Kristin Bradbury stopped the only shot she faced.

Bonnie Case made seven saves on 18 shots for Bangor.

JV: Stearns 1-0

Foxcroft 5, John Bapst 0

At Dover-Foxcroft, Emily Austin and Amanda Howard scored a goal apiece in each half to pace the Ponies in the two teams’ mutual opener.

Both of Austin’s goals came on penalty strokes. Jess Burgoyne scored the other Foxcroft goal, and Harita Reddy assisted on a Howard score. Megan Ryder made three saves on four shots.

Julia Sleeper made 18 saves on 27 shots for the Crusaders of Bangor.

JV: Foxcroft 4-1

Mattanawcook 1, Brewer 0

At Brewer, Jaide Littlefield converted a Courtney Gulesian pass in the first half and Colleen Cloran made it stand up by rejecting four shots in the mutual season-opener.

Sarah England made five saves for Brewer.

JV: Mattanawcook 7-1
