Wight’s Glass wins state title

AUGUSTA – Wight’s Glass of Ellsworth won the state Class C men’s slow-pitch softball championship, going undefeated in the 37-team, double-elimination tournament held here July 23-25.

In the title game, Wight’s Glass defeated Pudgy’s Cycle of Portland 7-3.

The Brooksville Bandits, out of the Ellsworth district, finished third with Locker Room of Bath finishing fourth.

The top four teams advance to the New England Championship Tournament, to be held in Lewiston from Aug. 20-22.

R.J.’s of Bangor finished tied for 17th with a 1-2 record. R.J.’s was the top finishing team from the Bangor district.

No. Stars head to Tennessee

The Maine North Stars will take a combination of height and long-range bombers to Knoxville, Tenn., on Wednesday, for the 1993 AAU Basketball Senior Division National Championship Tournament.

Coach Carl Parker, interim head coach at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, is taking the 13-player squad to the 19-and-under tournament, which gets under way on Friday.

The roster includes: Mark Baxter, Jason Webster, and Ken Rassi of John Bapst in Bangor; Ryan Bradford and Danny Dahl of Bangor High; Steve Pooler and Scott Springer of Old Town; Brian Colman of Brewer; Jon Kunz of Hampden; Mark McInnis of Winslow; Dale Landrith of Camden-Rockport; Chuck Graham of MCI; and Chris Funk of Caribou.

Rassi stands 6-foot-10, Webster is 6-8; and Bradford, Pooler, Landrith, and Kunz each are listed at 6-5.

“Size-wise, we’re not going to be bad,” Parker said. “But one thing we do and have done well is shoot the ball. We had 18 3’s in one game in Canada from the international line.”

In the last two years, the Maine North Stars have survived the round-robin pool play and qualified for the medal round before losing two games in the double-elimination playoffs.

According to Parker, no Maine AAU team has won a game in the medal round.
