Winslow’s `D’ dumps Orono

ORONO – A lot has been said about Winslow High School’s defense this season. On Friday night, the Black Raiders showcased their offensive abilities.

Coach Mike Siviski’s Black Raiders rolled up 356 total yards behind a balanced offensive attack and, on the other side of the ball, continued to play devastating defense en route to a 31-0 LTC Class B football drubbing of previously unbeaten Orono High.

Winslow, the defending state Class B champs, moved to 4-0 while also recording its 16th consecutive win dating back to last season. Orono not only slipped to 3-1, but also lost its first night game since 1989.

“Both offensively and defensively, we did a great job tonight,” said Winslow QB Marc Hachey (3-for-6, 92 yards).

“Our offense has improved a lot this last week, especially facing a tough team like Orono. We wanted to pick on certain individuals in their defense and we just went right at them. The line did a great job. The holes were enormous,” he added.

Senior fullback Chris Gilbert led Winslow with 89 yards on seven carries. Senior tailback Todd Wentworth added 78 yards on 12 carries and Chris Houston picked up 53 yards on 10 attempts.

When Orono had the ball, Winslow did what it does best – played tough defense.

The Riots snapped the Black Raiders’ two-game, no-first-downs-surrendered streak, but still only finished with a total of five first downs. The Riots gained 87 total yards as Winslow limited Riot running back Zac Pelleriti to 27 yards on 13 carries.

The Black Raiders had so much faith in their defense that, with less than one minute left in the first half and holding a tenuous 12-0 lead, they were faced with a fourth-and-34 from their own 29-yard line and tried a fake punt.

Hachey’s pass was incomplete, giving Orono a chance to score to end the half.

Winslow stopped scrambling Orono QB Erin Main for a 1-yard gain before intercepting him to end the half.

In the third quarter, the Raiders blew the game wide open.

All told, Winslow ran 12 plays in the third quarter. Three of them failed to gain at least 10 yards as the Raiders averaged 13.1 yards per play in the quarter.

Orono had opened the second half by fumbling away the ball on the first play. Three Winslow plays later, Chris Gilbert scored on a 14-yard dive to make it 18-0.

Orono then gave up the ball on downs before the Black Raiders marched 62 yards in five plays, scoring when Hachey hit split end Dan Ferrigan in between two Orono defenders for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Winslow capped the scoring when, on a first-and-goal from the O-3, Hachey looked to sneak in, but fumbled. Houston, trailing the play, picked up the ball and ran the final two yards for the score.

“Winslow has got an excellent football team. There is no question about that,” Orono Coach Bob Lucy said. “They played well on both sides of the ball. They’ve got a lot of weapons. All the kids in their backfield have good speed and they’re shifty. In the second half, we just didn’t come to play and that disappoints me.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Winslow took a 12-0 lead in the second quarter.

Hachey scored on a 4-yard keeper with 11:19 left in the second quarter, capping off an eight-play, 64-yard drive.

After three Orono plays and a punt, Winslow scored again when Houston bounced off the line of scrimmage and broke outside for a 14-yard TD run.
