Karate students place in regional tournament

BANGOR – Students from the American Tae Kwondo Association of Karate for Kids schools in Bangor, Brewer and Old Town participated in regional competition Sept. 7 at the ninth annual Cape Cod Classic in Bourne, Mass.

More than 630 competitors took part in the tournament which was attended by Grand Master Soon Ho Lee of Arkansas, the leader of the Songahm style of tae kwondo.

Students competed in forms and sparring, a timed contest in which points are awarded for punches and kicks against the opponent.

Students from Bangor and Brewer Karate for Kids placed as follows:

. Tiny Tigers (ages 4-6) – Matthew Breen, Carmel; Austin Cyr, Glenburn; Jacob Earl, Veazie; Stephanie Hayes, Bangor; Konnar Kirlin, Bradford; and Sadey Turner, Eddington.

. Karate for Kids (ages 7-12) – Jon Christopher Breen, Carmel; Cory Hayes, Bangor; Chelsea Husson, Glenburn; Frank Keeler, Bangor; Zachary Kirlin, Bradford; Erik Lee, Hampden; Erin Lee, Hampden; John Murray, Argyle; Sean Stone, Bangor; Spencer Warmuth, Brewer; Emily Chapman, Glenburn; Rachel Earl, Veazie; Ashley Husson, Glenburn; Mitchell Hurst, Bangor; Jordan Lorenz, Hermon; and Joshua Woodward, Holden.

. Teens (ages 13-18) – Josh Buck, Bangor; Nikki Higgins, Hermon; Dan Davis, Bangor;

. Adult – Marjorie Earl, Veazie; Sean Kane, Bangor; Alex Moore, Orrington; Dan Shaffer, Bar Harbor; John Campbell, Bangor; John Flood, Bangor.

Students from Old Town Karate for Kids who placed in the teen black belt divisions were: Matt Borok, David Chapman, Sean Seavey, Eryn Nelson, Matthew Seavey and Paul Nelson.
