I have read, very sadly, that the vote on Basin Mills has been delayed. This project clearly met the test of the law. Just because one or two BEP members substituted their own reasonings for the legal criteria is not sufficient reason for Bangor Hydro to go back to the drawing boards.
The public at large is very cheated in this process. I served in the Legislature and when we passed laws we didn’t expect citizen boards would callously ignore them. The Rivers Bill does not require dam removal to get a permit for the Basin Mills or any other site.
Good, clean electricity is so important to our future. I have lived without electricity in my lifetime. I have seen industry pollute to the point of disaster. I am encouraged to think that we are cleaning up our environment for the future generations.
I believe that the state Board of Environmental Protection is depriving all of us of the best energy project the state of Maine has seen in many, many years. Enough delay! Approve the project and let it move forward through the federal regulatory system. Catharine Lebowitz Bangor
