John Bapst High of Bangor gave its Homecoming crowd something to remember on Saturday night, knocking off Mattanawcook Academy, the No. 1 ranked team in the LTC Class C Heal Point Standings, 14-7 at Cameron Stadium in Bangor.

The Bapst upset highlighted the weekend’s high school action around the region.

In other contests, Mount Desert Island had to go to overtime before defeating Rockland 14-8, Winslow came from behind to defeat Hampden Academy 37-14, and Old Orchard Beach routed Boothbay 41-7.

At Bangor, Nate Hall’s recovery of a muffed punt return led to the go-ahead score for the Crusaders.

After Hall’s recovery at midfield, David Bennett spearheaded a 50-yard drive by carrying the ball five times for 35 yards. The last carry turned out to be an 8-yard touchdown run, making it 7-6. On the two-point conversion, Chris Mailepors hit Mark Baxter in the end zone for an 8-7 Bapst lead.

Roger Brasslett (14 carries for 93 yards) broke a 64-yarder in the final quarter, giving Bapst, now 2-4, its game-winning edge.

The Bapst defense, spearheaded by Hall (12 tackles, two fumble recoveries) and Baxter (15 tackles, one interception), limited Mattanawcook of Lincoln to 104 total yards and only five first downs.

Spike Clemons scored on a 1-yard run for the 3-3 Lynx.

MDI 14, Rockland 8 (OT)

At Rockland, Thom Mosley’s 10-yard run in the first overtime lifted the Mount Desert Island Trojans to the victory.

Rockland did not score on its OT possession, giving MDI the win.

The Trojans, now 4-2, got on the board first when Mosley (193 yards on 21 carries) scampered 13 yards into the end zone in the third quarter.

On Rockland’s ensuing possession, the Tigers knotted the game at 8-8 when quarterback Chris Mills scored on an 11-yard keeper. A 60-yard kickoff return by Jamie York had set up the game-tying score. York also had the two-point conversion.

Winslow 37, Hampden 14

At Winslow, after spotting Hampden a 14-0 lead, Chris Houston’s four touchdowns keyed the Black Raiders’ comeback.

It was the 18th consecutive victory for Winslow, which is 6-0 this season. Hampden slipped to 3-3.

Del Terrill (5-yard run) and Sheldon Beal (18-yard pass from QB Reid Harris) staked the Broncos to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Winslow then stormed back.

Houston scored on a 55-yard run and added the PAT to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Winslow QB Marc Hachey gave the Black Raiders the lead for good, hitting Ken Bourget and Houston on TD passes of 72 and 75 yards, respectively. Houston, who had a total of 27 points in the game, closed out the scoring with a 1-yard run and a 10-yard pass reception from Hachey.

Houston only carried the ball nine times, but picked up 115 yards. He also had three receptions for 93 yards. Hachey was 10-for-21 for 254 yards.

Terrill had 95 yards on 14 carries for Hampden.

OOB 41, Boothbay 8

At Boothbay Harbor, the visiting Seagulls scored on their first five possessions en route to the win.

Matt Herbst started the scoring, making it 14-0 in the first quarter on a 1-yard TD run and a 41-yard TD pass from Mike Geyer. Ken Hout then picked off a Boothbay pass and returned 33 yards for another scoring, giving OOB a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Sjhon Frazier and Jason Frazier then made it 35-0 with 5 and 6 yard TD runs, respectively, for 5-0 OOB.

Boothbay, 1-4, got on the board in the final quarter when QB Ben Kaler hit Eddie Crocker for a 41-yard TD pass.
