Howlers post OT victory

HOWLAND – Freshman Matt Cummings scored the first two goals of his career Thursday, including the game-winner with 38 seconds remaining in the second overtime, to lead Penobscot Valley to a 2-1 schoolboy soccer victory over Central of Corinth.

Cummings headed in a crossing pass from Dustin Nicholson for the game-winner as the Howlers knocked off previous unbeaten Red Devils, now 4-1-1.

Matt Mulligan also had an assist for 4-1 Penobscot Valley. Garrett Lavertu made eight saves on nine shots.

Joe Allen scored off a pass from Adam Allen for Central. Scott Chambers racked up 34 saves off 36 shots.

Hermon 4, Foxcroft 1

At Dover-Foxcroft, Jason Shorey racked up two goals plus an assist as the Hawks defeated the Ponies.

Brian McGinley and Chris Harding scored a goal each for 2-2-2 Hermon. Joey Carmichael and Adam Gould had an assist each. Chris Fournier made 14 saves on 17 shots.

Manuel Blanc tallied a goal and Sunny Kim an assist for 1-4 Foxcroft. Kevin Brown and Dan Lubas combined to stop seven of 13 shots.

John Bapst 4, Penquis 1

At Milo, the Crusaders of Bangor tallied three second-half goals to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock.

A.J. Stein, Sam Hill, Josh Jameson and Bjocen Sudeck picked up a goal each for 3-2-1 John Bapst. Sam Gray dished out an assist. Rick Hathaway rejected nine of 15 shots.

Jordan Allen scored off a pass from brother Justin Allen for the Patriots. Kevin Nason made 15 saves on 21 shots.

Brewer 1, MDI 1 (2OT)

At Brewer, Richard Hillard’s unassisted goal with 9:50 to play knotted things up, and that’s the way it stayed through two overtimes.

Adam Thurston made six saves on 12 shots for 2-2-1 Mount Desert Island.

Will Prescott tallied an unassisted goal for the 3-1-1 Witches with 26:35 left in the second half. Matt Quimby made three saves on five shots.

JV: MDI 2-1

Piscataquis 3, Bangor Christian 0

At Bangor, Chase Burdin provided a goal and an assist as the Pirates of Guilford blanked the Patriots.

Caleb Davis and Matt Free added a goal each for 3-0-3 Piscataquis Community. Josh Luellen got the shutout, making six saves off 13 shots.

D.J. McCleary stopped 14 out of 24 shots for 3-1-1 Bangor Christian.

Highview Christian 9, Averill 1

At Hinckley, Nick Waite scored four goals and assisted on another and Thiago Martinelli had a pair of goals and two assists as Highview Christian upped its record to 3-0.

Anthony Kneeland, Chad Crooker and William had the other goals for the winners, Andrew Richard had an assist and Aaron Waite made nine saves on 13 shots.

David Arnold converted a penalty kick for 0-4-1 Averill and Christian Gregor made 33 saves on 57 shots.

Schenck 5, Lee 0

At East Millinocket, Seth Johnston and Chad McLaughlin racked up two goals each to spark the Wolverines.

Johnston tallied two assists for 2-2-1 Schenck, and Tim Thompson added a goal. Drew Fayle and Pat Jamo had an assist each, and Mike Rossignol got the shutout, stopping eight of 10 shots.

Chris King made 13 saves on 27 shots for the 1-4-1 Pandas.

JV: Schenck 2-1

Belfast 3, Maranacook 3 (2OT)

At Belfast, Chris Williams scored off an assist by Aaron Cross with 2:23 left in regulation, giving the Lions a tie against the Black Bears.

Belfast (3-1-1) had erased a 3-1 deficit on goals by Caleb Barnaby and Williams. Robert Johnson scored the other goal, with Cross assisting on all three.

Chris Abbott and Collin Cunning combined to make nine saves on 27 shots.

Charlie Calligan scored twice for 4-0-1 Maranacook of Readfield. Evan Haines tallied once, while Mike Buckley making six saves on 19 shots.

JV: Maranacook 3-1

George Stevens 7, Searsport 1

At Blue Hill, Mike Astbury and Blake Wessel racked up two goals each as the Eagles rolled.

Andrew Lymburner and James Lawsing each had a goal and an assist for 4-1 George Stevens. Nick Henry had a goal, and Mark Clapp and Tim Carter had an assist each. James Friend and Mark Ensworth combined to make eight saves on 15 shots.

Jesse Rodgers tallied a goal for the 2-4 Vikings. He and Kurt Lockhart combined to make 12 saves on 26 shots.

Girls soccer

Bucksport 4, Ellsworth 0

At Bucksport, Jessie Taylor scored one goal and assisted on two others to pace the Golden Bucks past the Eagles.

Jill Richards, Alice Andrews and Stacy Lozier scored one goal apiece for 4-0-1 Bucksport. Nichole Pacheco and Elissa Gordon added assists. Brittany Damon made one save on four shots.

Victoria Jones and Mallorie Jones combined to make eight saves on 22 shots for 2-3 Ellsworth.

Highview Christian 4, Averill 1

At Hinckley, Carissa Cary scored a pair of goals to pace Highview Christian of Charleston

Heather Meyer and Lauren Plourde scored the other goals with Plourde and Linda Pereira each picking up assists. Sherry Cooper made eight saves on 17 shots.

Angela Alley scored off a Danielle Bowen pass for Averill and Natasha Gagne made 14 saves on 22 shots.

Field hockey

Brewer 3, Hermon 2

At Brewer, the Witches jumped out to a 3-1 lead and held off the Hawks for the win.

Carolyn McAvoy scored two goals for 1-4 Brewer while Jessica O’Connell added a goal. Sarah England turned away eight of 10 shots.

Jessica Deprey scored both goals and Melissa Hills made seven saves on 10 shots for 0-5 Hermon.

JV: 0-0

Old Town 4, Mattanawcook 1

At Lincoln, Mary O’Connor knocked in two goals to propel the Indians to the win.

Liz Saucier tallied a goal and assist for 3-1-1 Old Town, and Amanda Littlefield dished out an assist. Emily Richard made two saves on six shots.

Laura Olsen provided the goal for the 2-2 Lynx and Courtney Gulesian had the assist. Colleen Eloran and Ashley Emery combined to make 13 saves on 17 shots.

JV: Mattanawcook 3-0

Dexter 4, Stearns 0

At Dexter, Meagan Fogarty scored two goals and assisted on one to help the undefeated Tigers roll to their fifth victory.

Courtney McCormick and Sarah Wyman each added a goal for the Tigers and Nicci Burton and Michia McKusick had an assist apiece. Cindy Koscielny made two saves on two shots.

For 2-2 Stearns of Millinocket, Kristen Bradbury registered 30 saves on 39 shots.
