Curry beats up Mariners Bates, Bowdoin, Colby lose games

MILTON, Mass. – Tim Philbrook threw three second-quarter touchdowns to Brad Dick as Curry beat Maine Maritime 38-7 on Saturday.

Philbrook completed 10-of-18 passes for 188 yards and three touchdowns, and the Curry defense held Maine Maritime (0-2, 0-1 New England Conference) to 24 yards passing.

Raphael Zammit gave Curry (3-0, 1-0) a 7-0 lead with a 41-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and Philbrook found Dick for touchdown passes of 27, 19 and 52 yards as Curry took a 29-0 lead at halftime.

B.J. Dunlap scored the lone touchdown for Maine Maritime with an 87-yard run in the fourth quarter. Moses Curry led Curry with 119 yards rushing, including an 81-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Trinity 17, Colby 10

HARTFORD, Conn. – Thomas Pierandri rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns as Trinity beat Colby College 17-10 Saturday in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Pierandri scored on a 13-yard run in the second quarter to give the Bantams a 7-0 lead. He also scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Skip Sullivan kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter, a score set up when he recovered his own kickoff after Pierandri’s first score. Sullivan’s short kick bounced backward and he fell on it.

Aaron Stepka scored on a 3-yard run with 7:04 to play for Colby. But Trinity held the ball for all but 37 seconds the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Quarterback B.L. Lippert connected on 23 of 39 passes for 222 yards for Colby.

Greg Ward completed 11 of 17 passes for 177 yards for Trinity.

Amherst 19, Bates 0

AMHERST, Mass. – Fletcher Ladd rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown as Amherst beat Bates 19-0 Saturday in the opener for both teams.

After a pair of David Bodner field goals gave Amherst (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) a 6-0 lead at the half, Jeff Ryan capped an 11-play, 54-yard drive with a 1-yard TD plunge late in the third quarter. Ladd ran 16 yards for a score with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter.

As a team, Amherst rushed for 251 yards on 52 carries.

Kane Janoski completed 19-of-27 passes for 188 yards and an interception for Bates (0-1). Jeff Browne was 10-of-20 passing for 140 yards and two interceptions for Amherst.

Williams 38, Bowdoin 7

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Ryan Friend caught 13 passes and two touchdowns for 131 yards as Williams beat Bowdoin 38-7 on Saturday.

Two quarterbacks figured in the scoring for Williams (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC). Joe Reardon completed 20 of 25 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns. And Jake Moore gave Williams a spark in the second quarter when he drove the Ephs 52 yards and connected with Friend to make it 10-0.

Williams scored on four of its next five possessions. After Bowdoin (0-1, 0-1) cut the lead to 10-7 on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hardison, Reardon found Friend in the end zone to make it 17-7 with 2:07 left in the first half.

Tim Crawley scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass, and Mike Hackett and Tyler Shea scored on short runs to cap the scoring in the third for Williams.
